DVV Trofee - Baal
5 Jan 2018
Difficult weather conditions for the bicycle racers
At the beginning of the new year 2018, the seventh run of the DVV Verzekeringen Trofee took place in Baal. Tim Merlier had a difficult start, because after a few hundred meters, the cyclist from Crelan-Charles had to carry his bike due to material problems. At the front, the fight between Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel went straight on. Toon Aerts seemed to move along, but he literally fell away.
The top duo stayed together until halfway, but Van der Poel thought his moment came. The Dutchman took eight seconds in no time, which broke his competitor's spring. For the third place, an exciting fight between Corné van Kessel, Toon Aerts and Laurens Sweeck was observable.
Michael Vanthourenhout went wrong on the wooden bars and flopped the second bar with his chest. The Marlux-Bingoal rider kept lying down for a while, but still stepped on his bike to defend his eighth place in the middle distance. That intermediate position, in the meantime, captured the Flying Dutchman completely. He was already more than five minutes ahead of the general classification.
Van Aert fell over the wooden bars in the last lap and kept his wrist a little uncomfortable on the steering wheel. Half a minute later Kessel beat his teammate Aerts for third place.
Katie Compton has performed a good race in Baal. However, it did not look good for the American in the first round. The first pinpricks came from Nikki Brammeier, the surprising Ceylin Alvarado and Annemarie Worst. In the opening phase, Compton especially stood out with a solid head roll.
However, the fall did not seem to bother her. A mud-stained Compton pushed back quickly and took advantage of a firm smack in the mud of Worst to take over the lead. A position that the American no longer gave away. Thanks to the victory in the GP Sven Nys, Compton is immediately certain of victory in the IJsboerke Ladies Trophy.
In the background, Worst maintained a good position in the second place. After a long chase of Sanne Cant, plagued by back problems, Maud Kaptheijns took third place at the end of the race.
The final race of the DVV Verzekeringen Trofee will take place on February 10th in Lille.
