DVV Trofee visits Antwerpen
21 Dec 2017
World Champion, Sanne Cant takes the win in the ladies race but mens World Champion, Wout Van Aert can only manage second
On December 16th, the fifth round of the DVV Verzekeringen Trofee took place in Antwerpen (BE).
Lars van der Haar and Kevin Pauwels took the best start in the Soudal Scheldecross and because Mathieu van der Poel was held up, he had to pursue in the early stages. The European champion, however, came in front again and Wout Van Aert became acquainted with the decor.
It looked like the end for Wout van Aert, but the world champion did not want to loose and eventually closed that gap. Van Aert took the lead in the hill zones and set his pace. He seemed to be heading for a sprint, but the walking strip on the beach in the loose wet sand decided differently. Van der Poel accelerated immediately afterwards and Van Aert could not keepup with him. The Dutchman booked his 18th victory of the season for Van Aert in 3 seconds and Laurens Sweeck at 1'06 ". In the ranking of the DVV Insurance Trophy, Van der Poel strengthens its leading position.

The audience at the Scheldecross in Atwerp saw a very strong field in the fifth round of the Ladies Trophy. Marianne Vos returned to competition. After an enthusiastic start, the Dutch had to be satisfied with an eighth place.
At the front there was an international group of five with Sanne Cant (BE) , Katie Compton (USA), Katerina Nash (CZ) , Helen Wyman (UK) and Nikki Brammeier (UK). Brammeier had to drop out first. After some mistakes, Nash also saw her chances of winning go up in smoke.
Cant and Compton entered the final lap side by side. The world champion tried to shake the American, but the leader in the Ladies Trophy bit herself in the wheel of Sanne Cant. When Sanne Cant accelerated in the last mud strip, she left Compton behind.
That is how Cant conquered her fourth victory in a row in the Scheldecross, a record. It is her ninth victory of the season and the 99th from her career. Compton keeps the lead in the general classification of the Ladies Trophy. The American has a big lead over Nikki Brammeier (3:37) and Helen Wyman (4:11).
On Thursday 28th December, the sixth race of the DVV Trophy will be held in Loenhout with the Azencross.
