Final of DVV Trofee Cyclocross championship

15 Feb 2018

Mathieu van der Poel wins the fnal round in Lille

On 10th of February, the 8th and last round "Krawatencross" of the DVV Verzekeringen took place in Lille. For the ladies tour, Sanne Cant has won this race. Mathieu van der Poel has achieved the first rank for the men's elite.

The 27-year-old Sanne Cant separated herself from the Dutch Maud Kaptheijns and Annemarie Worst respectively. Laura Verdonschot was fourth for the Dutch Manon Bakker.

The American Katherine Compton was seventh at 1:42 behind Sanne Cant but is the final laureate of the DVV Verzekeringen Trofee. The British Nikki Brammeier finishes in second place in the 6:11 standings of Compton. Maud Kaptheijns finished third at 6:26. Best Belgian was Sanne Cant with a fifth place at 8:30.

It was the Dutch Maud Kaptheijns who first went into the woods of Lille. The rest of the group followed neatly in her tracks. Kaptheijns kept the pace high and so we got two leaders with the Dutch and Sanne Cant. Cant, in turn, accelerated on a strip of sand and left Kaptheijns behind her for a moment. Not for long however. The Dutch battled back firmly and could reconnect before the end of the first round. Just like Annemarie Worst by the way. Ellen Van Loy followed eight seconds. The Dutch Manon Bakker had to make up for eleven seconds.

The American Katherine Compton, authoritarian leader in the standings was unlucky in the opening round, even had to make a shoe change, and would not play any longer for the final victory. The trio Cant-Kaptheijns-Worst did that battle. The world champion wavered until less than three rounds of the end. Kaptheijns followed on two rounds of the end on five seconds of Cant. Worst had to make up for that eighteen seconds. Laura Verdonschot had returned to fourth place.

Sanne Cant was no longer in trouble and was able to book her seventeenth win of the season. No matter how hard Kaptheijns tried, she would eventually end up thirteen seconds away from the world champion.

Mathieu van der Poel has won the Krawatencross in Lille. The Dutchman made it for Tim Merlier and Laurens Sweeck. Van der Poel also guarantees final gains in the DVV Verzekeringen Trofee.

Van der Poel chose from the start for the hares' path and continued his solo until the finish. The European champion thus achieved his 27th victory in the cyclo-cross season. Tim Merlier (Crelan-Charles) beat Laurens Sweeck (ERA-Circus) in the sprint for second place. New world champion Wout van Aert, who is in the last straight line to the Flemish spring, only came up with the eighth place at his hometown.

Last week van der Poel had to leave the world title surprisingly to Van Aert. The Dutchman now puts the DVV Verzekeringen Trofee in the pocket after losing the World Cup. In that ranking he will be running for almost 9 minutes at Toon Aerts, who will be second. Van Aert ends third.
