Shortened race denies team podium chance

3 Jun 2024

After the shortest 24 hours race in it's history, Toyo Tires with Ring Racing finished 5th and 6th in the SP10 class.

The two Toyota GR Supra GT4 Evo cars were fitted with Toyo Tires latest Proxes Slick developed at the Nürburgring. With rain forecast just after the race start, plans had to be made for drivers and tactics in the morning meeting as the Proxes wet tires have had less testing due to few rain affected races in the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie.

The two Toyota cars had qualified 6th and 11th in a field of 15 cars in their class. Lead car, #170 was in P6 with car #171 in P11. Both cars took the start in the rainy conditions. Mechanical issues brought car #170 into the pits for around 30 minutes and the car slipped down to P9 and was overtaken by the second car, #171 which had climbed to P8 from its P11 start position.

Repairs completed, the number #170 car set a storming pace, climbing back to P6, just behind the second car, #171 in P5, before the race was red flagged at 23.23 because of the thick fog which had descended on the circuit. So dense was the fog that organisers advised racing was suspended until at least 8:00 the next morning.

Next morning came and the fog remained. The race director opened the pit lane at 09:30 and the grid formed but the teams were in for a long wait. Announcements about the start kept being pushed back as the weather did not improve. Finally, four hours after the pit lane opened, at 1.30 in the afternoon, the race restarted, with 5 formation laps behind the safety car. At the end of this, race control announced that the race would end and no further racing would take place. At, 3.05PM, before even 24 hours had elapsed, the shortest ever Nürburgring 24h race was over and the P5 and P6 positions of the two Toyota GR Supra GTs Evo cars was fixed. The team were left wondering what could have been.

The cars will be back at the Nürburgring in three weeks for the third round of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie, the 69. ADAC Westfalenfahrt, when they will be hoping for better racing weather.
